There is unfortunately no real obligation to wear helmet while riding a bicycle, furthermore we notice many children and young cyclists still without this essential accessory. This also applies to children in child seats and cargo bikes.
For most children, the helmet is a brightly colored accessory to show off and it may happen that parents, at the request of the child, buy a helmet they think is the most beautiful. But we can all agree that a helmet must above all be safe, as well as comfortable to wear. Our feeling, as industry members, is that helmet choice is made lightly, even if we are talking about protecting the most vulnerable part of our body.
To ensure maximum protection from the very first experience with a balance bike or scooter, it is essential to choose and have the child wear a quality well-fitted helmet. A helmet is effective in preventing trauma only if it is worn and adjusted properly.
Here are some key features to consider when choosing a helmet for children:
- Ventilation: this is essential, especially if the helmet is worn for a long time. In fact, it also allows the head to remain cool in direct sunlight.
- Weight: for children, this factor is even more important than for adults. Quality materials allow for a lighter helmet (but at the same time be durable) ensuring less strain on the neck muscles.
- Size: here is a simple rule to ensure the right fit. Measure the circumference of the head with a tape measure. For a child, circumferences between 44/45 and 55 cm are the normal range.
- Comfort: when fastening the straps and adjusting the helmet properly, the helmet should not bob around on the head, or have pressure points on the nape, forehead or temples.
- Compliance: to be sure that the purchase is in line with current legislation, take a look at the manufacturer’s specifications on the label. The words “CE” and “EN 1078” or “EN 1080” should be visible.
This is basic information that you can find almost everywhere, but now let’s look at some more in-depth specific advice.
- The paint: A well-known helmet brand will be compliant with regulations, using non-toxic paint and chemical components.
- Be seen: Safety is inextricably linked with visibility. There are now many helmets on the market that integrate an LED light that aids visibility. Choosing a bright visible color is also recommended.
- Insect net: a detail that few think about is to protect the front vents of a helmet from the possible unpleasant entry of insects. This is an extra attention that could avoid a potential insect sting or bite.
- Complete protection: be wary of a thin helmet. Make sure the temple and neck area are well protected.
- Fit and adjustment: always choose a helmet that is adjustable to a variable size circumference, so as to ensure the best positioning on the head. As a rule, a good quality helmet should have an adjustment of between 4 and 6 cm.
- Washable: when choosing a helmet it is also worth checking that the internal pad inserts are removable so that they can be washed.
- Helmets for babies: if you want to carry a baby, perhaps inside an Infant Sling by Thule Chariot or on a front seat, there are some helmet options. The sizing starts from a 45cm head circumference, common for a newborn of a few months.
