Bosch continues to evolve its Smart System ecosystem with the new Performance Upgrade 2.0 for the Bosch eBike Flow app.
The software update introduces more torque, greater customisation and an even more aggressive motor response — affecting not only the new Gen 5 units, but also several configurations based on the Bosch Performance Line CX and Cargo Line Gen 4 motors.
The update confirms Bosch’s strategy: turning eBikes into software-updatable platforms capable of improving over time without any hardware modifications.
Performance Upgrade 2.0: more power and personalisation
The eBikes available at Moez — from Riese & Müller, Focus, Kalkhoff and Flyer, and especially cargo eBikes — are not bikes built to be pushed to the limit on a race course. The goal here is not simply to increase power, but to make pedalling feel more natural and controllable, particularly on steep climbs and low-speed restarts.
With the new update distributed via the Flow app, Bosch allows compatible drive units to unlock performance up to:
- 120 Nm of peak torque
- 600% pedalling support
- 750 W of peak power
- More immediate motor response during technical accelerations
The upgrade is installed directly via OTA (Over The Air) through a smartphone, with no need to visit a workshop for mechanical changes.
Gen 4 motors benefit from the update too
One of the most interesting aspects of Performance Upgrade 2.0 concerns the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4 motors, still widely used in the eMTB market.
While not always reaching the peak levels of the newer Gen 5 units, many eBikes equipped with the Gen 4 Smart System motor can achieve:
- Improved assistance response
- More advanced Riding Mode management
- A more refined Extended Boost
- More progressive torque delivery
- Advanced customisation via the Flow app
In practice, Bosch extends the lifecycle of Gen 4 eBikes, keeping them competitive against more recent models. For many riders, this means a more responsive and modern-feeling bike — without changing the motor or buying a new eBike.
Extended Boost: more control on technical terrain
Among the most appreciated features of the new update is the evolution of Extended Boost — the system that keeps assistance active for a few moments after you stop pedalling. Originally designed for mountain bikes tackling technical off-road sections, this update significantly changes the riding feel on Gen 4 motors, making assistance smoother and more predictable.
New drivetrain management
Bosch has also introduced new software optimisation dedicated to the drivetrain, designed to reduce mechanical slack and improve the connection between pedal input and motor response. The result is a ride that feels more direct, more precise, more controllable on technical trails, and less abrupt during power transitions.
Here too, the benefits are particularly noticeable on eBikes equipped with the Gen 4 motor, especially for riders using EMTB or Turbo mode.

Performance Upgrade 2.0 is available for several Bosch Smart System eBikes, including:
- Performance Line CX Gen 5
- Performance Line CX-R
- Select configurations based on the Bosch Gen 4 Smart System motor
